INTRODUCTION

WSIS and the future of ICT is the third in a series on the World Summit of the Information Society produced by the ICT Task Force in collaboration with GDS Publishing Ltd.

The magazine is primarily based upon articles from a recent ICT Task Force publication “The World Summit on the Information Society: Moving from the Past into the Future”. Together with some new pieces, this selection provides an introduction to the key issues of ICT, globalization and development, and the complex undertaking of the WSIS. Readers interested in learning more on these issues are invited to read the full length version of the book available on-line here.

The contributions to this magazine reflect the successful multi-stakeholder approach of the ICT Task Force, providing insights from representatives from both governments, the private sector, civil society, academia and international organizations. The articles look back on the WSIS process and examine how it has evolved, but more importantly they also look forward to the challenges ahead and the potential that lies within information and communication technologies and how they can help to improve the lives of people all over our planet. The overreaching goal of the WSIS is to establish the foundations for an Information Society for all, through which the world will be better equipped to achieve the Millennium Development Goals and ensure the universality of human rights and fundamental freedoms.

The ICT Task Force would like express our sincere appreciation to all those who made this publication possible. Our special thanks go to the contributors to this magazine for their thoughtful perspectives on the WSIS process. We would also like to express our deepest gratitude to Ambassador Daniel Stauffacher, Professor Wolfgang Kleinwächter and Dr. Julia Steinberg for their assistance in coordinating the communication with all the authors.
